Category 7a or Class Fa is a next generation standard written by the International Electro-technical Commission or IEC which will increase the defined frequency from 600MHz for Category 7 or Class F systems up to 1000MHz for Category 7a or Class Fa. This new standard is intended to accommodate future applications that will support data rates beyond today’s highest speed copper based Ethernet protocol which is 10G Base-T. Currently 10G Base-T Ethernet is designed to run on a Category 6a system which has a maximum frequency of 500MHz. It is expected that future higher speed Ethernet systems will require a bandwidth greater than that offered by Category 6a and this is where a Category 7a system would fill the requirement.
