Reed Relay Overview Slide 7

As can be seen on this slide, with the closure of the contacts there is a slight vertical motion, as well as a horizontal motion. This results in a scrubbing action on the contacts. This movement is occurring hundreds of times per second. Any non-uniformity on the contact surfaces, or particles, will present a different frequency pattern. If there are any slight cracks, or stress to the reed switch, the frequency patterns will also be altered.
