In the past, Nichrome thin film resistors could not be used in high humidity applications because of their tendency to dissolve or corrode over time. In these situations, engineers needed to use self passivating Tantalum Nitride resistors. When Tantalum Nitride resistors are exposed to moisture, a protective film of Tantalum Oxide forms over the film, limiting the moisture damage. However, Tantalum Nitride resistors are not an ideal high volume solution because of their high cost. Stackpole has solved this problem by introducing a new low cost precision resistor with passivated Nichrome film.
