USB-PD is defined by the USB-IF consortium as “USB Power Delivery (USB PD) Specification enables the maximum functionality of USB by providing more flexible power delivery along with data over a single cable. Its aim is to operate with and build on the existing USB ecosystem”. What this means is that it specifies how a USB-PD power adapter needs to function to allow a single adapter to be used with multiple compatible devices, as determined by the end device. Many people confuse USB-C with USB-PD. USB-PD technology uses the USB-C connector and its assigned pinout configuration to both provide power, and to also allow data transfer and programing to enable the USB-PD functionality.
