MEMS oscillators are readily available in any frequency. The quartz supply infrastructure has several constraints which can result in long lead-times, on the order of 12 to 16 weeks or even longer. One constraint is the limited number of ceramic package suppliers. Another constraint is that every frequency needs a different crystal cut. Therefore, availability of non standard frequencies can be very long. In contrast, the output frequency of MEMS oscillators is generated simply by programming the phase locked loop (PLL) to different multiplication values, enabling a very wide frequency range with 6 digits of accuracy. In addition, MEMS oscillators use standard semiconductor processes and plastic packaging, and are therefore completely decoupled from the ceramic package supply chain. Sample lead-time can be 1 day, even for non standard frequencies. By using SiTime’s low-cost Time Machine II programmer and field-programmable oscillators, designers can instantly program a device with any frequency, any supply voltage and any stability within the product’s operating range. Production volume lead-times are 6 to 8 weeks.
