For applications which require wide digital buses between the system controller and the signals which need to be isolated, the Si866x family provides a wide channel count (six). Such applications can be found in systems such as isolated gateways, industrial PLCs (programmable logic controllers), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), test and measurement and data acquisition systems. The Si8660 is a six channel isolator which offers an 80% board space reduction when compared to existing optocoupler based designs. The isolation family is also offered in space saving narrow body SOIC packaging. The narrow body devices achieve 3.75 kVrms isolation while reducing board space by an additional 30% versus standard wide body packages. Besides a greater than 10x reduction in physical size, the Si86xx provides additional benefits in power, timing specs, and reliability over other wide bus isolation solutions. Compared to optocouplers, the Si866x device can provide a 5x savings in quiescent current. The Si86xx family offers competitive timing specifications. The maximum propagation delay is 13 ns, almost 3x better than what is available from common optocouplers, and about 65% of the delay offered by competing CMOS based isolators. Jitter is often not specified by competitors, but can be a huge concern for data acquisition systems. At 350 ps the Si86xx family’s jitter is a good solution. Finally, reliability is a benefit for these devices, especially in terms of lifetime. The 60+ working voltage lifetime ensures that the isolation outlast the system and directly reduces maintenance costs over less robust solutions like optocouplers.
