The culmination of the three major forces mentioned previously led to the industry creating harmonized “industry accepted” standards of safety. CEN/CENELEC is a European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization. The committee establishes standards for electrical equipment to ensure marketability. The committee established two different standards that would serve as pillars for functional safety. EN ISO 13849-1 is the safety standard that codifies safety design standards for control systems based on safety performance levels that resulted in a calculated risk reduction. This standard is referred to as “PL” or “PL rating”. EN/IEC 62061 is the safety standard that establishes the functional safety requirements and risk reduction strategies for machinery specific aspects of a safety related electrical control system. This standard is referred to as “SIL” or “SIL rating”.
