There are 3 main ways to select a suitable fan for a chassis: by collecting experimental data such as temperature readings of critical components, by using computational fluid dynamics simulation software to model the airflow and heat transfer characteristics in a chassis, or by using a rough heat transfer equation to calculate airflow required to maintain a desired temperature. All 3 methods have their respective shortcomings.
