Another common problem that causes unnecessary sound is when a faceplate has a smaller opening than the intake area of a fan. This not only creates more noise, but also reduces the airflow performance of the fan by choking the inlet airflow. As shown here in the diagram on the right, it is strongly recommended for optimum performance to have a sufficiently large opening to the fan with smooth edges.
