In a standard resistor, junction cracking can occur when the resistors environment is subject to constant temperature change. The picture shows terminal cracking in a 2512 size resistor mounted on a PCB after 3,000 temperature cycles of 30 min at 105˚C then 30 min at -30˚C. Resistor junction cracking is a mechanical failure that will degrade system reliability. The use of wide terminal resistors will minimize junction cracking due to temperature cycling.
