In summary, banana plugs and jacks are used by many types of electronic professionals. Standard 4 mm banana plugs are used below 1 MHz, and are not designed for handling more than 33 Vrms applied. They are often used for connecting DC power supplies or DMMs to low-energy electronic circuits. Shrouded, or “sheathed” banana connectors have an insulated cover over the conductive plug and are rated for measurements above 33 Vrms with appropriate DMMs. Many other connection types are available for similar applications, including miniature and 2 mm banana plugs/jacks, spade lugs, pin tip plugs/jacks, terminal strip adapters, binding posts, panel mount jacks, and couplers.
