IEEE 802.3af Standard for Power-over-Ethernet Slide 3

When a compliant PoE enabled PSU is connected to a device, a series of checks is enacted to ensure that the device requires power and determines the amount needed. Before the standard was ratified, many devices were unregulated passive power injectors that could overpower end devices inadvertently through misconnection. The standards definitions for detection and connection ensure safe operation and handling.
