The next slides present some brushless DC motor applications and the requirements for their motor drivers. Products that meet these requirements will be listed for the customer’s reference.
For a Notebook or Ultrabook application, low voltage start up is required. Because no one wants to hear the fan while they are working, silent drive is important. The most silent method of driving a fan motor is with BTL or three-phase. Of course low power is needed to keep from being a burden on the battery. Ultrabooks thin profiles are squeezing the thickness of the fan and thus the package of the driver included in it. These fans are usually selected by the notebook designer with the driver already a part of the package. That is why the motor maker is usually the one who makes the decision on the driver.
