Another convention used by some drivers is to have more exponential changes in the duty cycle rather than equal increments. In this example, the LED driver has 16 selectable steps that were extracted from a total of 256 gradations. This is shown in Figure 2-a. In this situation, the LED has a more gradual transition from fully off to fully on, but each adjustment in duty cycle results in a very noticeable change in brightness. This creates a stepping or flicker effect, where the observer is able to perceive a jump in brightness for each adjustment in the duty cycle. This is shown in figure 2-b.
