What is Time of Flight (ToF)?

To provide clarity on how this sensor works, the E3AS-F utilizes ToF sensing technology. ToF detection works by measuring the time it takes for the sensor to emit light, bounce off of the object, and travel back to the receiving element in the sensor. The time elapsed is then used to calculate the distance from the sensor to the object. A large benefit of using the E3AS-F ToF sensor is that it does not use the amount of received light intensity as its sole means for detection. While the sensor-emitted light must bounce off of the object in order for the sensor to properly detect, its detection capabilities are largely not affected by objects' characteristics such as luster, shine, color, and angle that are known to greatly alter the amount of light reflected back to the sensor. Since ToF technology uses time instead of light intensity, the physical characteristics of the object are ignored.
