The SC16C850 is a new 1.8 V, low power, single channel UART with serial data rates up to 5 Mbps. The SC16C850 can be programmed to operate in extended mode which offers advanced UART features such as automatic hardware buffer overflow control, special character detection, and automatic sleep mode. It also provides enhanced UART functions with a 128-byte FIFO, a modem control interface, and an IrDA encoder/decoder. On-board status registers provide the user with error indications and operational status. Also, internal loopback capability allows on-board diagnostics.
