To accomplish the task of monolithically converting thermocouple temperature signal to a serial interface, Analog Devices introduces the MAX31855. It replaces the amplifier, precision resistors, high-resolution ADC, and voltage reference. Because the MAX31855 automatically performs internal cold-junction compensation, it also replaces the external temperature sensor otherwise required for that task. Thermocouple in, serial data out, without signal conditioning or calibration required to be performed by the designer. The MAX31855 is the only product of its kind to offer support for several types of thermocouples, allowing designers to work with only one device for various applications that call for different thermocouples. The design of the MAX31855 allows for a resolution of 0.25°C over the temperature range of -270°C to 1800°C. It is calibrated to achieve an accuracy of up to ±2.0°C for K-type thermocouples from -200°C to 700°C. Please refer to the product specification for accuracy specs for other thermocouples and temperature ranges. Another useful feature of the MAX31855 is its internal fault detection that can detect and report thermocouple opens and shorts to Vcc or GND. The device utilizes a SPI-compatible serial interface and is packaged in an 8-lead Pb-free SOIC. The MAX31855 can be used in a wide array of applications that use thermocouples to measure temperature from -270°C to 1800°C, including temperature controllers, industrial controls, and other applications involving temperatures outside of the silicon range.
