The MAX13054A is a 5V, 2Mb/s CAN transceiver device. It has a high fault protection of ±65V and a high common mode range of ±25V. ESD is specified in a number of ways, but having a human body model specification of 25kV is one of the best in the industry. The high common mode range makes the MAX13054A especially suitable for applications where there might be one system operating off of one transformer and another system operating off of another. There is also a transmitter dominant time out that comes in handy if there is something wrong with the local controller or if data lines are held in the dominant state for too long. This feature prevents the communications line from locking out. A short circuit protection for CANH and CANL data lines is also available. This part is rated for -40°C to 125°C of operating temperature range. The VL pin enables the MAX13054A to interface with low voltage microcontrollers with a range of 1.62V to 5.5V. There is also a standby pin with three modes: a normal operating mode, a standby mode for lowering power consumption when there is no data transmitted or received and with a 26.1 kΩ resistor in between the standby pin and ground, and a slow slew rate mode which reduces signal rise and fall by about 10x. The MAX13054A can also be used in multiple applications in the industrial space such as factory automation, elevator controls, instrumentation, building automation, smart grid applications, and E-bikes.
