RGB LEDs, even those from the same LED manufacturer, will differ slightly in Red, Green, and Blue light output. For accurate color and especially for a ‘true’ white color, RGB LEDs require a current adjustment often referred to as ‘dot correction’ or ‘white balance’. Designers will find that when attempting to output a true white color, the RGB output will instead be a ‘pinkish’ white color. This is because the Red LEDs require less current to achieve the equivalent brightness of Green and Blue LEDs. Therefore, the Red LEDs need to be driven at a lower current to avoid over-saturating the output color. Individual tuning of the Red, Green, and Blue currents is necessary to achieve a ‘true color’ palette.
