LUXEON TX: Extremely High Efficacy

In the always competitive streetlight space, LUXEON TX can be used to build extremely high efficacy streetlights, low-cost streetlights, or something in between. In this example, a 64 emitter streetlight with 90% optical efficiency and 85% driver efficiency with a Thermal Resistance from pad to ambient of 0.2 K/W is driven between 500 mA and 1.2 A in order to deliver 12,000 lumens with a 1% flux output design margin, for a minimum of 12,120 lumens. Using 64 LUXEON TX 4000 K 70 CRI part with a minimum flux of 270 lumens driven at 500 mA, the streetlight delivers 12,234 lumens at 112 lm/W. Using 32 LUXEON TX 4000 K 70 CRI part with a minimum flux of 270 lumens driven at 1,166 mA, the streetlight delivers 12,234 lumens at 92 lm/W. In this case, the cost to manufacture the fixture decreases in three ways: fewer LEDs to purchase for each fixture, fewer LEDs to pick and place, and depending on the optical design of the fixture, fewer individual optics to purchase and assemble into the fixture. By taking advantage of LUXEON TX’s industry leading flux and efficacy, streetlights can be designed for excellent performance, low cost, or a mix of both.
