The cholesteric material (or liquid crystals) in a bi-stable LCD change the texture, thus the optical properties, as voltage is applied and withdrawn. In the absence of power, the material remains in one of two states. Either the “ON” state, where light reflects out at the viewer, or ‘the OFF’ state, where light passes through the material. By applying a suitable electrical field, the cholesteric material will switch easily between these two states.
