In summary, when an LED fails in the open position it will effectively stop the flow of current to any series connected LEDs, therefore turning the string off. The PLED family of protectors is unique in that their primary purpose is not to provide overvoltage or overcurrent protection, but to bypass an LED that has failed open and not disrupt the flow to other LEDs in the series circuit. While Integrated Zener diodes provide overvoltage protection, they can not handle the current often required when an LED fails. The PLED device has a much higher current rating. Available in several breakdown voltage options, the PLED series comes in a standard QFN or SMB package.
