Linear Technology has an extensive family of silicon oscillators. These are simple, small, low power, accurate, and programmable clocks, for frequencies from 1kHz to 170MHz. Most of Linear Technology’s silicon oscillators are suitable for general purpose clocking. Some have been specialized for clocking and synchronizing switching regulators. Silicon oscillators are simple. They do not rely on crystal or ceramic resonators, and they do not rely on an external timing capacitors. They are 100% solid state, standard CMOS devices which provides for operation in high shock, vibration, and high temperature environments. In fact, most Linear Technology silicon oscillators are available for operation from -40°C to 125°C. The standard CMOS process also means that silicon oscillators can be combined with other circuitry for additional functionality, such as frequency programmability, multi-phase outputs, spread-spectrum frequency modulation, and smart startup circuitry. The TimerBlox family is an extension of this concept where they include a silicon oscillator and intelligent circuitry to achieve timing functions. TimerBlox parts are designed for five basic timing functions: voltage controlled oscillation (VCO), very low frequency clocking for long duration timing, pulse-width modulation (PWM), one-shot signal generation, and signal delay.
