This slide shows an accompanying high voltage buck regulator that steps down an automotive voltage to a system voltage that the LTC4040 can handle, for example in an asset tracking system. A typical multi-chip competing solution with smooth switchover and onboard termination may be built from a PowerPath controller, buck switching charger and boost regulator, combined with several discrete Resistors and Capacitors. However, this solution is both large and complex and would offer much lower performance than the LTC4040, which does the job of the three ICs as shown inside the box, with only one inductor required and with much higher performance.
