Several factors enter into the specification of a DC link capacitor. The capacitor voltage should be the same as the DC bus voltage at the minimum. The KEMET DC link capacitor datasheets also give information on the allowable ripple current and the operating conditions for that ripple current. Provided that the actual ripple current, ambient temperature, and voltage are within the datasheet limits, the operating life specified in the datasheet will apply. Often several capacitors are used in parallel to increase either the total capacitance or in the case of high ripple current. It is possible to consider other combinations of these parameters. For example a higher ripple current may be possible if the required life is shorter. In such cases the specific requirements should be discussed.
