In terms of competition, in-cylinder linear position sensors are a matured technology and industry standard. However, as mentioned earlier, it is indirect measurement of bucket position, hence more complex to implement. It is a high-cost sensor solution and has a high-cost for replacement and retro-fit. Besides the in-cylinder sensing solution just mentioned, inertial measurement unit (IMU) offers another indirect bucket position sensing solution. It is less expensive, but IMU requires special installation to withstand shock and vibration interference. Also, it has a much slower response time. The SMART Arc CAN position sensor not only enables direct and accurate position sensing in pinned joints, it’s more reliable and durable than other solutions. Of course, it’s not perfect. Product installation has a strict tolerance requirement, and customers need engineering support for initial integration in the design. Also, different pin diameters may need a different ring radius diameter. Currently, there are two sizes available in 161mm and 220mm.
