The HMC5883L is an integrated solution for compassing in high volume applications. The strengths of this three-axis compass IC are the utilization of anisotropic magnetoresistive sensing technology, optimized for sensing X, Y and Z axes for high performance compassing. The HMC5883L is capable of measuring low magnetic field strengths and is optimized for high latitudes like northern Europe and Canada, plus inside metal buildings where the fields get attenuated. The HMC5883L provides high orthogonality between the X, Y and Z sensors which ensures high accuracy. All three axes of the matched set of magnetic sensors use the same quality sensors. The low cross field sensitivity of the HMC5883L permits a highly directional precision compass. The HMC5883L provides ease of integration with three axes of sensors, sensor support electronics, a 12-bit A/D, and an I²C interface all in one small 3mm x 3mm footprint package. The high performance enables more value added features for enabling map orientation, adding headings to GPS latitude and longitude measurements and pointing capability for location based services and pedestrian navigation for assisted GPS.
