When considering the ProLynx™ APXW005 module, it is important to view it in light of an alternate to a discrete implementation where the designer would design, test, and implement the power solution. Shown in the table here is a review of some of the main variables. In regards to material management, having a discrete solution involves a lot of components to manage; procuring, second sourcing, and making sure the optimum components are chosen. Compare this to a Point of Load solution, where one part does the job. Discrete solutions occupy a lot of PCB real estate. An OmniOn Power Point of Load solution is very dense with respect to packaging, offering up to a 50% reduction in space compared to discrete solutions and commodity point of load products. Furthermore, OmniOn Power field application engineers offer total solution support. There is a myth that discrete designs can easily be used across different applications and different boards. The reality is that every design needs to be modified and every design needs to be verified. So the ability to take a product and easily scale it up or down or use it across different platforms really does not pan out. However, OmniOn Power Point of Load modules are designed to be part of a palette and part of a standard footprint solution that makes application very easy across many different platforms and many different applications. When talking about production control, a failure of a discrete solution usually results in scrapping an expensive PC board. The Point of Load module failure rate is very low and the module is easy to replace. Additionally, Lineage Power Point of Load modules are designed to be both standard, as in “applicable to many customers globally”, as well as optimizable and configurable. This allows the modules to be used easily and customized to the particular application. Moreover, discrete solutions offer low component cost. However, when considering that Point of Load modules offer a significant advantage both in reducing the cost and duration of development as well as increasing reliability, the Point of Load modules offer the lowest overall cost of ownership. Finally, reliability and re-spin are a significant point of risk for discrete solutions. OmniOn Power Point of Load modules are designed to sell in the millions and therefore demonstrate very robust designs.
