How much power can be saved? It depends on the usage profile. Here, four different usage profiles are studied over a 24 hour period for a 300W rated board. The blue usage profile allows for a gradual increase and decline in load over the course of a day. The purple profile demonstrates a system that is usually at a low power level, but spikes for a few hours. Each case demonstrates different savings with the spiky load capturing the greatest benefit, but with all versions demonstrating improved savings over a conventional 12V fixed bus. The result is a savings between $7 to $10 a year based on the cost of energy and cooling. This is a significant cost savings relative to the cost of the power modules employed.
