The purpose of the bootstrap diode is to maintain the charge in the bootstrap capacitor. However, during initial start-up when the capacitor is discharged, there may be a rush of current into the capacitor. Considering the effects of this on both the diode and the capacitor, a series resistor will very often be used as illustrated here to limit the inrush current.
