Chances are, one has considered embedded cellular in the past, but rejected it due to the high recurring cost of the data plans from carriers. However, with the emergence of LTE Cat 1, and coming in 2017, LTE-M and NB-IoT, the economics are far more favorable – less than $2/month for small data plans. For small or geographically dispersed deployments – such as low-power wide-area (LPWA) applications seen in agriculture and environmental monitoring – it can be cheaper and easier to embed cellular connectivity in each device instead of aggregating through a single gateway.
