Reed Switch Basics Slide 3

Generally, a switch is a device that turns electrical current on or off. In a reed switch, reed-like blades of nickel and iron form the switching mechanism. This composition of nickel and iron is easily influenced by electromagnetic energy. A small area near the end of each blade is plated with a very conductive metal like rhodium, ruthenium, gold or a combination to provide a highly conductive surface allowing for low and stable contact resistance.
