An example of AVX solutions in a USB charger is the use of the TransGuard series MultiLayer Varistors (MLVs). TransGuards act as a sub-nano second response time, bi-directional, transient voltage clamp in the on state. In the off state they act as an EMC capacitor with a range of capacitances from 0.8pf to 16nf. MLVs exhibit many advantages over TVS diodes including: faster turn on time, smaller size, lower leakage, ability to withstand a large number of high current strikes, and higher reliability.
