Below the components level is a standard set of peripheral drivers, often referred to as the hardware abstraction level. This layer presents a common API on top of the wide range of available microcontrollers, making the components and services layers portable across devices. Microchip offers different assortments of each on-chip peripheral driver, ranging from polled to interrupt-driven and fully automatic using the on-chip DMA controller.
