The security of encrypted data is entirely dependent on two things: the strength of the algorithm, is the algorithm robust enough against attacks; and the secrecy of the key, are the different keys used in the system protected and securely transmitted? Encryption usually refers to decryption too. The two main types of encryption that will be discussed in the following slides are symmetric-key encryption and public-key encryption.
