In order to enable efficient data exchange in large-scale networks, the ZigBee standard utilizes topologies enabled by data IEEE 802.15.4 transfer models and extends them by specifying tree and mesh network topologies. Often, in order to deliver data from one end of the network to another, a packet will be forwarded several times by intermediate routers. Such a routing procedure requires an intelligent route discovery mechanism that depends on the network topology. However for all topologies routing is built in NWK layer and does not require any additional effort on the user application level.
