The following features should be considered when choosing the frequency band. The most commonly used band for LPWNs is 2450 MHz because it is available worldwide without need for licensing and it has the highest data rate achieved with simplest modulation. On the other hand, the sub-1 GHz bands (915/868 MHz) provide better signal range than 2.4 GHz band. The set of channels available for usage by an LPWN node is configured on higher layers and is used as follows. When starting the network the coordinator scans preconfigured channels and chooses one with least activity detected. When joining the WPAN, a device scans through the given set of channels and reports discovered networks to higher layers to permit joining.
