A single mixer mixes two RF frequencies down to the same IF. One of those RF frequencies is referred to as the desired sideband; it can also be referred to as the fundamental sideband. The other RF frequency is referred to as the undesired sideband (USB). The mixing product from the USB adds noise and possibly other spurious components to the IF signal, thus degrading performance.
