As was previously mentioned, the AS8510 is tailored to accurately measure battery current, from mA range up to kA range in combination with a 100µΩ shunt resistor connected in series with the battery rail. The battery is becoming a major power source for many systems, replacing the engine. A good example is the hydraulic clutch changing to a double clutch transmission with electrical actuation. An important system previously powered by the engine will now be powered by the battery. That is the reason battery performance is getting now critical with conventional vehicle solutions and even more for HEV/EV. Also, conventional cars will have battery management to measure the state of charge (SOC), the state of health (SOH) and the state of function (SOF). The goal is definitely to save power.
