Human senses typically can detect the thunder and lightning up to approximately 10 km away. When outdoors, this can be critical as a distance of 10 km from the head of the storm does not provide sufficient advanced warning to take cover as that is already the Extreme Danger zone since lightning can strike at angles. It is imperative that any type of early warning system be capable of alerting in advance. The Lightning sensor will provide warning up to 40 km away with distance estimation capability that gives the estimated distance to the head of the lightning storm.
