For sensing beyond 200A, a common configuration involves the use of a Hall-effect sensor in a standard in-line package, or SIP, placed in the gap of a ferromagnetic concentrator. In this case, the flux concentrator is designed and created by Allegro’s customers. Flux lines prefer to travel in the ferromagnetic concentrator rather than in air. Therefore, the concentrator focuses the flux generated by a current carrying conductor through the gap in the concentrator. It is in this gap that an appropriate Hall effect sensor SIP, like the Allegro A1360 device, can be used to accurately and effectively measure large currents. The A1360 family is available in a 1mm thin package that allows for a small concentrator air gap. The smaller air gap allows for greater magnetic coupling and greater system accuracy in high current sensing applications. The Allegro sensor gain is programmable by the user and can be configured to measure ranges up to 2000A. The A1360 family of devices are factory compensated at Allegro for consistent performance over temperature. The sensors have very stable zero Amp output voltage and gain over temperature and provide 120KHz bandwidth, making them ideally suited for HEV inverter applications.
