An IoT device can be connected to the Internet via a wired connection where it is plugged directly into an Internet router, sharing access to a much higher bandwidth connection and can be more immune to capacity issues or noise. However, this type of connection can have concerns. These wired connection types require an ISP or other LAN setups, which can have physical restrictions on where the LAN could extend to and the set-ups can be complicated for a consumer device. Additionally, troubleshooting a consumer device can be more difficult; is the home user’s network up, is the home user’s wireless working, is the signal strength sufficient? Even more fundamental, does the target consumer have a home internet connection?
