To understand how LTE Category M (Cat M) is different than the LTE used in a mobile phone or other high speed device, it may be helpful to use the metaphor of a highway, with the SIM card as the toll. In the middle of this image is the fast lane, where high speed (LTE Cat 3 and up) devices operate. On the left, the LTE Cat M on the “service road” it also requires a SIM card, but because it will use less bandwidth it pays a cheaper toll. Finally, on the right a “bike path”, where no toll is required for Wi-Fi and other LPWAN technologies.
