ATS’ 3-Core Design Process was used to approach the customer’s problem. In Core 1, ATS developed analytical models using fundamental principles of thermodynamics. These resulted in a solid understanding of the thermal challenge. In Core 2, CFD models were then created to model the air flow and effectiveness of the design. Finally, in Core 3, ATS manufactured prototypes of the heat sinks with embedded heat pipes for empirical testing to finalize the design. In this case study, ATS created dummy test boards according to the customer’s design. The test boards had the exact thermal load as the customer’s boards. Dummy component placement was also the same in order to accurately test airflow. ATS’ test set up included the BWT-104, research grade bench top wind tunnel with 1U blade analyzer option, the FSC-200, fan speed controller for precise fan/fan tray speed control, the iQ-200, air pressure, temperature and velocity measurement system, ATS Candlestick sensors and iQ-Stage data acquisition software.
