Increased Speed-to-Market. Cutting-Edge Wireless Technology.

Panasonic Wireless Connectivity solutions encompass a wide range of technologies, with a focus on helping design engineers increase their product’s speed-to-market. The Panasonic product portfolio covers all of today’s latest communication protocols with ready-to-use modules for Bluetooth Classic, Multi Mode, and Low Energy. Designed with simplicity in mind, Panasonic Wireless Connectivity solutions allow design engineers to quickly extend wireless communication into their feature set without a comprehensive knowledge base of wireless hardware and software design.

Bluetooth Classic is best suited to high data rate – up to 3 Mbits/sec – applications where the network size is under eight nodes. Larger networks can be formed with Scatternets. Connections are robust, even in noisy environments, by using 80 channels, each 1 MHz wide, adaptive frequency hopping, and multiple modulation schemes. Range can be adjusted using hardware and software from under a meter to over two hundred meters. Panasonic offers multiple series of Bluetooth devices with over 20 parts numbers to address nearly every application.

Multi Mode require only 85.5 mm2, including antenna, of board area; 80% less than any multi-module or device design; all while reducing costs associated with incorporating two wireless technologies. This unique design feature enables designers to seamlessly transition between Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy enabled modules, addressing larger markets and providing migration paths to circumvent obsolescence.

Low Energy is designed to reduce power consumption. It can be put into a sleep mode and only activates for event activities such as sending data to a gateway, PC or mobile phone. Furthermore, the maximum power consumption is less than 15 mA and the average power consumption is about 1 μA. The foundations of low energy consumption are short messages and establishing very fast connections (few ms). Using these techniques, energy consumption is reduced to a tenth of a Classic Bluetooth unit. Thus, a small coin cell – such as a CR2032 – is capable of powering a device for up to 10 years of operation.

Introducing Panasonic’s Bluetooth Low Energy Beacon based on one of the world’s most energy efficient modules, Panasonic’s PAN1740. The ultra-low power consumption of less than 5mA in Tx mode enables the PAN1740 Beacon to run on a single coin cell battery for years. This compact beacon is just 26 x 24mm and includes an antenna, ARM CORTEX M0, 256kB flash and CR2032 coin cell battery holder. The PAN1740 Beacon is pre-configured (using flash memory) for out-of-the-box evaluation and use. Simply apply power by inserting a CR2032 battery and see the beacon using the Locate Beacon App from the Google Play Store. The integrated flash memory is available for custom applications.

Beacons continuously transmit a universal unique user ID (UUID) number to devices such as smartphones, tablets, and personal computers. An app then uses that UUID to execute a course of action such as ranging and indoor positioning, providing shoppers with personalized sales pitches, special promotions and coupons at specific store locations and presenting the user with additional information on points of interest. This asymmetrical scheme, where the beacon transmits only its UUID, and the app carries 99% of the processing load, allows beacons to be highly efficient and run for years on a coin cell.

The PAN1740 Beacon may be purchased individually or in production quantities. The PAN1740 Beacon Kit enables designers to create custom applications and beacon specific parameters (UUID, Major/Minor ID). Each PAN1740 Beacon Kit consists of five PAN1740 Beacon ETUs, Dialog Pro Motherboard, Beacon Adapter Board and Adaptor Cable. The PAN1740 Beacon ETU is a standard beacon with an 18 pin female connector compatible with the Beacon Kit’s adaptor cable.

PAN1323ETU Triple Mode Simplifies the Development Environment - One development module, three standards: Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Low Energy and ANT™.

This unique triple-mode ETU – that’s ETU for “Easy-To-Use” – module plugs directly into Panasonic development kits, Texas Instruments MSP430 and Stellaris experimenter boards with the added benefit of header connectors that simplify prototype wiring and field trials.

The PAN1323ETU is the development environment for the PAN13xx family*. This family is based upon Texas Instruments’ CC256x integrated circuits and uses a host controlled interface (HCI), a cost effective and flexible means to implement a Bluetooth network. HCI reduces BOM cost by eliminating redundant processing capacity and giving designers the flexibility to work with a controller of their choosing, as the Bluetooth stack resides and executes on the application’s host processor.

Bluetooth Low Energy and ANT are ultra-low power network standards. The foundations of Bluetooth Low Energy power consumption are short messages and establishing very fast connections (few ms). Using these techniques, energy consumption is reduced to a tenth of a Classic Bluetooth network. ANT is a wireless sensor network protocol operating in the 2.4 GHz spectrum, designed for ease of use, efficiency and scalability, ANT supports peer-to-peer, star, tree and fixed mesh topologies.
