ADABOX 003 - What’s Inside?
2017-03-29 | By Maker.io Staff
Adafruit has partnered with DigiKey for the latest edition of the ADABOX subscription series, ADABOX003. For those readers who are unfamiliar with the ADABOX, it is a $60 subscription service delivered straight to your door every quarter and each box delivered is a mystery package. The contents on the box usually focus on a specific part of making or electronics. For example, ADABOX001 was an introduction to the Feather series of development boards design and manufactured by Adafruit themselves. The ADABOX002, was based around the Adafruit Feather Bluetooth module designed to show users how to make things move by creating a mini robot.
Currently the subscription service is only available in North America and not for International orders, but Adafruit is working on making it available to everyone. All the items that come in the box do not require any soldering skills, so if you’re a beginner in electronics, you do not require any soldering skills whatsoever.

The Maker.io staff here at DigiKey have been lucky enough to get hold of an ADABOX003 and we can show you what’s inside of this quarters edition. The theme for this ADABOX is the Internet of Things based around the Feather HUZZAH. The Feather HUZZAH is an ESP8266 based development board with built-in WiFi capabilities for connecting your electronics to the cloud. The kit comes with a whole bunch of smart sensors such as PIR motion, light, temperature & humidity, door sensor (Magnetic) and also a bunch of LEDs and switches. Of course, all these sensors wouldn’t come without any way of displaying the data, so it also includes an OLED feather wing display that fits right on top of the Feather HUZZAH development board.
As mentioned before there is no soldering required for this kit, all the components are through hole, which means they can directly be inserted to the provided breadboard and the Feather HUZZAH development board and OLED display module come with pre-soldered headers. The kit also comes supplied with male-to-male jumper wires for easy prototyping and if you’re a subscriber then you will also get a 6-inch PCB ruler and limited edition IoT badge.

The kit comes with plenty of sensors and components to start interacting with the Internet-of-Things through the Adafruit.io cloud. There are plenty of examples to get started with on the maker.io web portal.
