SCF-XV Common Mode Chokes | First Look

The KEMET SCF-XV coils are AEC-Q200 qualified common mode chokes with a wide variety of characteristics for automotive and harsh environment industrial applications. These toroidal coils are designed with nanocrystalline metal cores allowing for it to achieve a small form factor with outer diameters as small as 27 millimeters and a maximum height as low as 19 millimeters. In order to achieve effective noise reduction, it is important to select the material, core shape, size and number of windings according to the target frequency band. Materials with higher magnetic permeability are effective in the lower frequency range, while those with lower magnetic permeability are effective in the higher frequency range. The nanocrystalline metal core found in the SCF-XV coils allows for efficient noise reduction and is an optimal material that can function at a wide range of frequency bands. The use of a nanocrystalline core has also helped the common mode choke to achieve an AEC-Q200 and a higher operating voltage range, a rating most ferrite core alternatives lack. Most ferrite cores are rated for at most 750 V AC and DC and generally have a larger footprint. The SCF-XV has been designed for high voltage automotive and harsh environment industrial EMI filtering applications and offers up to 1,000 volts AC and DC, and is rated for the currents from 5 to 35 amps, with a DC resistance from 0.65 to 40.3 milliohms. The choke has a rated inductance range from 0.11 to 21.2 millihenries and has a 100 kilohertz inductance measurement condition. The SCF-XV works at an operating temperature from -40°C to +150°C. This series supports the industry’s trend to increase the vehicle-installed Lithium-ion battery pack voltage to limit drive train currents. The compact size helps designers to miniaturize product designs. Applications include onboard chargers for electric vehicles, E-compressors, wireless charging systems with 85 kilohertz, medium power drives for power steering, air conditioning, and mild hybrid 48 volt systems.
