Bourns Polymeric Thermal Cutoff Devices | DigiKey Daily

Bourns offers their series of polymeric thermal cutoff devices, which are designed to protect USB-C cables from potentially dangerous thermal runaway events. Two series are offered: the P-TCO-U series, which comes in a 1210 footprint, and the P-TCO-N version, available in an ultra-compact 1206 footprint. Each series features a maximum operating voltage rating of 12 volts, a maximum operating current rating of 50 amps, and comes in three different versions to offer protection for six different temperature/current combinations. Both series can achieve initial resistance values as low as 2 milliohms and post-trip resistance values down to 14 milliohms, allowing them to attain current-carrying capabilities up to 4.5 amps. Applications include USB-C cables and connectors, and protections for mobile device fast-charging ports.
