Improved Thermal Cycling Performance

RCA-HP resistors can also be used to improve reliability of a circuit board against thermal cycling. After a high number of temperature cycles, mismatches of the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between components and the PCB can cause solder joint fatigue. Minimizing the distance between terminals helps to mitigate temperature cycling issues. This can be accomplished by using smaller RCA-HP components to achieve the necessary power dissipation rating. For example, a standard sulfur resistant 1206-size resistor with power rating 0.25 W can be replaced with one RCA-HP 0603-sized part which will have better thermal cycling performance. The special design of the RCA-HP strengthens the terminals against thermal cycling, even outperforming standard parts of the same size. To illustrate, the RCA0805-HP will meet 2,000 cycles of thermal cycling requirements while the standard sulfur resistant 0805-size thick film chip resistor is only specified up to 1,000 cycles.
