The Charged Device Model (CDM), Human Body Model (HBM), and International Electrotechnical (IEC) 61000-4-2 are common ESD protection standards. HBM tests last about 150 ns, with about 1.3 A max being conducted through the Device Under Test (DUT), during the typical 2 kV test. The CDM test lasts 1 ns, with about 2-5 A being conducted through the DUT depending on package, during the typical 2 kV test. The IEC ESD test is a two part test with a 1 ns pulse followed by a 50 ns pulse. To achieve the highest level of IEC ESD 61000-4-2 ESD protection, which is level 4, the device must be tested at 8 kV. During the IEC ESD test the peak currents are 30 A and 16 A, which will lead to a very robust ESD protection solution.
